about

In about 1989, Intel did an event in Hillsboro, Oregon introducing "distributive processing" and the 486. I was hired to write and record a music soundtrack to a slide show about the history of musical instruments, as a parallel to the history of computer technology. This was all written in MIDI on an Atari 1040 St, and recorded using some of the synthesizers, samplers, and drum machines available in the late '80s. There are no "real" instruments on this. The nature sounds at the beginning (birds, crickets, thunder, etc.) were made with drum machine samples with drastically altered speeds.

As for the music itself, I called it "A History of Music" rather than "THE History of Music," because I never studied the history of music, so huge swaths of that history are missing. It was also pointed out that I put a classical string quartet bit before a baroque organ and harpsichord bit. It's a little over 11 minutes long, which is still pretty short for a history. But hopefully the constant style changes will keep it interesting.

Sarah Jane Burke began playing piano at age five. She had a handful of piano lessons, but is mostly self-taught. She took up guitar at about age 11, mostly inspired by The Beatles, and other "British Invasion" acts.
