about

Wrote this song late Summer of 1972, during a thunderstorm, after I went out onto the porch and saw that one of our cats had almost completely devoured a mouse. She left its jaw and snout. I wrote it from the viewpoint of the mouse.

lyrics

Cats Eat Mice (Nimbus Grumbles)

LIghtning freezes the steamy night
Nimbus grumbles, don't like the light
Sounds like a mountain rolling down
To the river's mouth
When the water gets on my hide
Start a-running, get back inside
Here at the door I watch the show
To the West and South

When it's over I leave the house
Find a meal for a handsome mouse
Maybe a bread crust or two
Til the break of dawn
Getting into a tater peel
In between my little ribs I feel
Claws, and my throat is filled with teeth
And my breath is gone

Well, I guess that it's safe to say
Cats eat mice on a rainy day
All that she left here is my jaw
And my whiskered nose
