about

A happy little ditty written for my band in the early 1980s. I was working full time for a special needs transportation service; leaving a religion behind; and losing a marriage. Aside from the marriage turmoil, I was having a great time. I started playing this groove on the piano one night, and decided I should make it a song. It was the most requested original song at the band's live gigs. People cheered when the tempo slowed down drastically at the bridge, and sped back up. I didn't expect the dancers to like that. Shows how much I know.

lyrics

Desperation

Another world, another life
I dreamt I was a dancer
I asked a man which way to go
And I still need an answer
I play enough to satisfy
My restless imagination
But movies, music, games, and beauty
Can't stop the rising wave of
Desperation

I work my job, I pay the bills
I spend all day doing one thing
A thousand channels on TV
And I'm still missing something
There must be more than work routines
And useless recreation
The body worship's getting old
Excuse me, this looks like a job for Desperation

We got the dogs, we got the cats
We got our vision enhancers
We got our garden in the back
But I still need an answer
A weathered town in Oregon
A hard beat radio station
The set and soundtrack for the film
Of my life
I think I'll call it Desperation
