about

I spent the entire year of 1976 living back in my hometown in the remote badlands of Eastern Montana, in a little town called Glendive. I lived rent-free in my parents' big house, writing songs on their piano, and playing with a band called The Pearls.

It was the height of the disco era, even in Eastern Montana, and it shows in this song, although it's kind of a polka rhythm on the piano. It reminds me of a circus, for some reason. Disco polka ska circus rock -- the next big thing.

The lyrics are the original ones. Apparently I was feeling like I wasn't being listened to, but there were probably reasons for that.

This is one of so many of my songs that I am baffled by, in the sense that I don't know where it came from. I just started playing it on the piano one day, and this is just the path it took. A lot of artists describe feeling like they are more of a conduit for some otherworldly creative energy, than the source of it. Maybe it's just a mysterious function of the human brain, but whatever it is, I'm grateful.

lyrics

Do You See Me?

Do you see me?
Do you hear my voice?
If you just don't want to listen
To what your missin'
You won't know what to do
When you find out
You can touch me
Reach on out and touch me

Baby maybe you'd hear what I say
If I was on top of a misty mountain
Starved to the bone
Just sitting there alone
As hard as a stone
But wiser

Maybe people will listen to me
If I'm the bad news angerman on TV
Here have some more
There's hate, disease, and war
Well now here's the score
And you lose

Maybe you could see truth in my words
If I was in front of you working magic
If I made it snow
From blue skies and sun
Then would you know?
Or would you just run and hide?
