about

This is one of the very first songs I ever wrote. It was 1968, so I was either a freshman or sophomore in high school. I was still recovering from a near fatal pneumonia and spending a lot of time pounding on our piano, and pounded this one out. It was inspired by The Rolling Stones "Can I Get a Witness," although there are probably a lot of songs that have this basic groove. These are mostly the original high school kid lyrics, but I added the 2nd verse in 1973 to relate to my plan to leave my gov't service job and move to Portland.

lyrics

Nothing

There's a place in the forest where I'm gonna be
A place in the mountains right next to the sea
And that's where you'll find me, vibrating the air
And there's nothing in this world
That can keep me from going there

'Cause I'm leaving the prison, the term I received
For wanting the the freedom we're all guaranteed
Now I'm gonna take it, can't wait anymore
And no mindless uniform
Can put me back behind his doors

I've got time for the changes, and space to expand
The mind and the dream, in the heart and the hand
And that's where you'll find me, vibrating like air
And there's nothing in this world
I say there's nothing anywhere
