about

February 1977, I had just moved back to Portland after spending the entirety of 1976 in my Eastern Montana hometown. I came up with this guitar riff while sitting on a friend's couch where I was crashing at the time. I eventually fleshed it out into this silly song about a flying saucer, and recorded a version of in the Spring of '79. Unfortunately, I was never quite happy with that version, even though it was recorded at a 24-track studio, the first and only one in Portland at the time.
I thought about rewriting the lyrics for this recording, but then decided this one's more about the guitar work than the words. So here I am recording the version I've always had in mind, only 43 years later! Damn, I'm old. Do I sound old? Probably . . .

lyrics

Trillion Miles Away

Woke up this morning, the moon in my eye
With out any warning, from out of the sky
A shiny flashing saucer
About ten yards across her
I froze right there in awe, sir

Out of the door come a strange looking sight
I could have sworn I was fooled by the light
A real live green eyed space man
He walked up to my face, man
And there began the chase, man

After a while I knew he was cool
So I stopped running away like a fool
I ask what games they play
A trillion miles away
And this is what he say . . .
